Ford urges Ontarians to spend Christmas at home

The provincial government is asking all Ontarians to avoid big parties and large family gatherings by staying home this holiday season to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

The province provided public health advice on Wednesday on how to protect you and your loved ones over the holiday season. While public health measures may be different in areas across Ontario, the provincial government said the safest way for everyone to spend the holidays is by only celebrating in person with the people you live with and celebrating virtually with everyone else.

"I know there are many people looking forward to their traditional family celebrations at this time of year, but to keep your loved ones safe, traditions will have to be adjusted," said Premier Doug Ford in a news release. "We're asking everyone to please stick to your own household when celebrating. Avoid big holiday parties or large family dinners to help us stop the spread of this deadly virus. By following this public health advice, we can all have a safe and fun holiday season."

Those who live alone are encouraged to only celebrate the holidays with one additional household. As well, any post-secondary students living away from home are asked to consider a self-quarantine for 10 to 14 days before returning home.

Provincial health officials are also suggesting that families tweak their holiday activities to ensure they are keeping their loved ones safe during the pandemic. Suggested activities include building a snowman or going on a sleigh ride with members of your household, attending a drive-in/drive-through event, and watching holiday or other movies with your household.

"The holidays are a special time of the year for many people, and while we all want to spend time with family and friends, we must celebrate safely to stop the spread of COVID-19," said Christine Elliott, the deputy premier and minister of health. "With the recent news about several vaccines, there's light at the end of the tunnel. I realize that it won't be easy, but we must continue to follow public health advice and look for new and creative ways to celebrate this year."

The Ontario government's website will soon be launching a new web page that will provide more direct and up-to-date guidance on how individuals and families can safely celebrate during the holiday season.
