London-area records 64th COVID-19 death

A woman in her 70s has become the 64th person with COVID-19 to die in the London area.

The Middlesex London Health Unit reported the woman's death Monday in its daily COVID-19 update. The health unit reported nine new cases, for a total of 1,477 since the start of the pandemic. A total of 1,284 cases are considered resolved, leaving 129 active cases.

The London Health Sciences Centre says it is currently treating 14 patients with COVID-19. Outbreaks have been declared on the fourth-floor medicine unit and the 9th floor orthopaedic unit at University Hospital. An outbreak was declared Friday on the 2 Perth unit at Parkwood Institute.

Southwestern Public Health, the health unit for Elgin and Oxford counties, reported 11 new cases Monday. It has reported a total of 496 cases since March. Of those, 62 are considered active. The death toll is unchanged at five with no new deaths since July.

Ontario set a new single-day record for new cases, as provincial health officials reported 1,589 new cases Monday. Another 19 deaths were reported, bringing the Ontario death toll to 3,505.

Of Monday's new cases, 535 were in Peel Region, 336 in Toronto, and 205 in York Region.

Across Ontario, 507 people are in hospital being treated for COVID-19. Of those, 156 are in intensive care and 92 are on ventilators.

Health Minister Christine Elliott said Monday morning that more than 37,400 tests were processed in the previous 24 hours. More than 18,000 tests are still awaiting results.
