Tenants displaced after St. Thomas apartment fire

St. Thomas fire crews were quick to act when a fire sparked at a high-rise apartment building on Sunday, however, some tenants have been displaced.

A fire at 294 Talbot St. was reported around 4:34 p.m. The Skyline Living apartment building, Grand Central Place, was evacuated so that firefighters could first put out the blaze and then deal with the amount of smoke in the building.

Platoon Chief Warren Scott said the fire started in an apartment unit on the fourth floor. He said the people who lived in that unit will be displaced.

An exact number for how many people will be displaced is unknown at this time because other tenants in nearby units might also be affected.

Scott said paramedics were at the scene to help those who needed treatement for smoke inhalation.

A cause has not been determined as the fire prevention unit is currently investigating.

A damage estimate is not yet available.
