27 more COVID-19 cases in London, Middlesex

After starting the week with just five new cases of COVID-19, the London area is finishing with three straight days of more than 20 new cases.

The Middlesex London Health Unit reported 27 new cases on Friday. That brings the total since the start of the pandemic to 1,440. There have been 1,241 recoveries reported. The number of active cases is 136, up from 124 on Wednesday.

Outbreaks of the virus continue on two units at University Hospital (fourth floor general medicine and ninth floor orthopaedic), however, there are currently no outbreaks at any long term care facilities or retirement residences in London or Middlesex County.

The London Health Sciences Centre says it is currently treating 11 patients with COVID-19.

Just two new cases were reported Friday by Southwestern Public Health, the health unit for Elgin and Oxford counties. That brings the case count up to 477. Of those, 61 are considered active. The death toll is unchanged at five with no new deaths since July.

Ontario crossed the 100,000 mark in confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Friday. Officials reported1,418 new cases and eight deaths. There have now been 100,790 cases in Ontario and 3,451 deaths.

Of Friday's new cases, 400 cases were recorded in Peel Region, 393 in Toronto, 168 in York Region, and 77 in Ottawa.

Across Ontario, 518 people are in hospital being treated for COVID-19. Of those, 142 are in intensive care and 92 are on ventilators.
