UPDATE: 2nd COVID-19 outbreak declared at University Hospital

Two units within London's University Hospital are dealing with outbreaks of COVID-19.

The London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) and the Middlesex London Health Unit declared outbreaks on the fourth-floor general medicine unit and the ninth floor orthopaedics unit at University Hospital on Tuesday.

The LHSC is not providing any additional details about the outbreak, including how many people have tested positive for the virus. Confidentiality is being cited as the reason for not publicly releasing more information.

When an outbreak is declared at the hospital, affected units are closed to new patient admissions and current patients are actively assessed. Visitors and designated care providers aren't permitted.

Staff working on the affected units are not allowed to work in other areas of the hospital until the outbreak is declared over and enhanced equipment and environmental cleaning measures are taken.

The units will have to go 14 days without a new case before the outbreaks can be declared over.

The outbreaks come as the London region sees an increase in COVID-19 cases. There have been double-digit increases in infections daily since last Friday, including a record 37 new cases reported on Sunday.
