Impaired driving charge laid after vehicle slams into house causing fire

Four people were hurt when a vehicle being driven by an alleged impaired driver crashed into a house, sparking a fire in northwest London.

A red sedan was heading west on Sarnia Road when the driver lost control just before 12:30 a.m. on Tuesday. The vehicle hit the curb before veering across the eastbound lanes and slamming into the side of a two-storey home at 1049 Oakcrossing Gate. According to London police, the vehicle was travelling at a high rate of speed prior to the crash.

The collision ignited a fire which melted the home's siding as it burned.

London firefighters were able to quickly douse the flames and vented smoke from the home.

Two occupants of the house and two occupants of the vehicle were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

"The damages to the residence and vehicle are estimated to be approximately $800,000," police said Tuesday. A city structural engineer is being brought in to determine whether the house is structurally sound.

Brittany Marie O’Neill, 26, of London is charged with impaired operation of a vehicle and driving with a blood alcohol concentration exceeding the legal limit. O'Neill is scheduled to appear in London court in relation to the charges on January 21.
