Alleged drunk driver crashes car with kids in back seat

A London woman faces impaired driving charges after police allege she crashed her car while her two young kids were in the back seat.

London police were called around 9:50 p.m. Saturday by a citizen who said they saw a woman asleep at the wheel of her vehicle at the intersection of Highbury Avenue and Huron Street.

"The suspect awoke when someone honked their horn," police said in a news release issued Monday. "The suspect continued to drive the vehicle north on Highbury Avenue, and was allegedly travelling between both lanes of the road. When the suspect reached the Killarney Road intersection, her vehicle crossed over into the left-hand turn lane and struck the traffic signal at that location before continuing north. The suspect stopped the vehicle a short distance away from the collision."

The woman and the two children were taken to hospital as a precaution. Police said none of the three suffered injuries.

A 42-year-old woman, whose name was not released, is charged with impaired operation of a conveyance and driving with a blood alcohol concentration exceeding the legal limit. She is to appear in court on January 19, 2021.

Police said the damage to the vehicle and traffic signal is estimated at $20,000.
