London-Middlesex reports 11 new COVID-19 infections

Nearly a dozen additional COVID-19 cases were reported in the London-area on Thursday.

The Middlesex London Health Unit said that 11 more people tested positive for the virus since Wednesday. That brings the region's total number of infections since the start of the pandemic to 1,071. So far this week, there have been 41 new cases, including four Sunday, 11 Monday, six Tuesday, and nine Wednesday.

There were no additional COVID-19 related deaths reported over the last 24 hours. The area recorded its 59th death, a 71-year-old man not connected to any long-term facility or retirement home, on Wednesday. His death was the second in the area since last Thursday.

Eight outbreaks continue at local long-term care and retirement homes - Oakcrossing Retirement Living, Westmount Gardens, Chartwell London, Chelsey Park, Henley Park LTC Residence, Craigwiel Gardens, McGarrell Place, and Extendicare. An outbreak at PeopleCare Oak Crossing was declared over on Wednesday.

Ten more recoveries were reported Thursday, increasing the number of resolved cases in London and Middlesex County to 944.

Currently, there are 68 active cases in the region.

In Elgin and Oxford counties, the total case count hit 300 with two new infections confirmed on Thursday. Southwestern Public Health, the health unit which oversees the two counties, reported one more person has recovered from the virus to increase the total resolved cases to 278. Five people in the two counties have died from COVID-19 since the start of the outbreak, with no additional deaths reported since July 3.

The area has 16 active cases.

New infections in Ontario rose above 800 again.

Public health officials said Thursday there were 841 additional cases, up from 790 a day earlier.

Many of the new cases were in Toronto, where 335 people tested positive. Another 162 are in Peel, 106 are in York Region, and 72 are in Ottawa.

Ontario’s total number of cases is 67,527.

Nine more people died from the virus over the past 24 hours to increase the death toll to 3,071.

The province saw 741 more recoveries. That puts the total number of resolved cases up to 58,066.

There was a slight increase in the number of COVID-19 infected patients in hospitals across the province with 270 people admitted. Of those, 74 are in the intensive care unit and 48 are relying on ventilators to breathe.

In the last 24 hour period, nearly 38,900 COVID-19 tests were conducted in Ontario.
