Nearly a dozen new COVID-19 cases in London-Middlesex

For the first time in a week, the Middlesex London Health Unit is reporting a double-digit increase in new COVID-19 cases.

Public health officials said Monday another 11 people tested positive for the virus. That is up from four on Sunday and nine on Saturday. However, it is still significantly lower than the record 25 cases reported last Monday.

"Over the last seven days, we've had 46 cases. That compares to 98 over the previous seven days," Mayor Ed Holder tweeted.

The total case count for the London region now stands at 1,045.

There are ongoing outbreaks of the virus at nine local long-term care and retirement facilities. They include Westmount Gardens, Chartwell London, Chelsey Park, Henley Park LTC Residence, Craigwiel Gardens, McGarrell Place, Extendicare, PeopleCare Oak Crossing, and Earls Court Village.

Twelve more people in the London-area have recovered, bringing the total number of resolved cases up to 920.

The death toll in the city and county remains at 58 with no new deaths recorded since last Thursday.

Currently, there are 67 active cases in the region.

Southwestern Public Health, the health unit for Elgin and Oxford counties, reported two new COVID-19 cases on Monday. The region's case count is now 293. Of those cases, 270 have been resolved and five people have died. That leaves the area's number of active cases at 18.

Provincially, there was a jump in the number of new cases confirmed over the past 24 hours.

Public health officials reported 704 new infections on Monday, up from 658 recorded on Sunday.

"There are 244 new cases in Toronto, 168 in Peel, 103 in York Region and 51 in Ottawa," Health Minister Christine Elliott tweeted.

Ontario's total number of cases since the start of the pandemic has now climbed above 65,000 to 65,075.

Four more people died from the virus over the past 24 hours to increase the death toll to 3,050.

The number of resolved cases rose to 55,978 with 607 recoveries reported Monday.

There are currently 252 COVID-19 infected patients in hospitals across the province. Of those, 69 are in the intensive care unit and 40 are relying on ventilators to breathe.

In the last 24 hour period, 31,864 additional COVID-19 tests were conducted in Ontario.
