Middlesex-London records first COVID-19 death since June

For the first time since the middle of June, the Middlesex London Health Unit is reporting the death of a person who had COVID-19.

The death of a 91-year-old man was included in the daily COVID-19 case summary released by the health unit on Thursday. The man was a resident of a local long-term care facility. His death marks the first COVID-19 related death reported in the community since June 12.

The health unit reported nine new cases on Thursday, for a total of 1,018 since the pandemic began. Of those, 866 people have recovered, leaving 94 active cases in the region. The death reported Thursday brings the total in London and Middlesex County to 58.

Provincially, Thursday marked another of more than 700 new cases of COVID-19 in Ontario. The province reported 783 new cases today, based on nearly 40,000 tests. Of the new cases, 239 were reported in Toronto, 136 in Peel Region, 127 in York Region, and 89 in Ottawa.

There is currently a backlog of 36,314 tests that need results.
