Public school board shifts to virtual grad ceremonies

Much like countless other events in 2020, graduation ceremonies at public high schools in the London area are going virtual.

The Thames Valley District school board announced on Wednesday that its secondary schools are planning online commencement ceremonies for the 2019-2020 graduating class. Instead of the big walk across a stage to receive their diploma, graduating students will receive a video keepsake.

The virtual ceremonies will include student photos and pre-recorded video presentations by staff, students, and special guests like Director of Education Mark Fisher, trustees, local MPPs, municipal leaders, or school superintendents. Families can request a copy of the digital keepsake.

“We recognize that graduation and awards ceremonies are important milestones for students and families,” said Superintendent Paul Sydor. “Our schools are committed to celebrating our students’ achievements in this virtual format.”

In-person school assemblies and traditional ceremonies are suspended at educational institutions across the province under strict guidelines that limit gathering sizes to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Those gathering restrictions led to muted graduation celebrations in the spring, when parents marked their child's achievement with lawn signs and drive-by parades. There was even a community wide campaign called 'Go Gold for Grads' that recognized local graduating Grade 8 and 12 students.

The virtual ceremonies are scheduled to take place before the end of November. Families can contact their child's school for additional details.
