Green Party announces Annamie Paul as new leader

Toronto-based civic engagement lawyer/activist, Annamie Paul has been selected as the new leader for the Green Party of Canada (GPC).

Paul is the first Black leader of a major federal party in Canada. She precedes former leader, Elizabeth May who led the party from August 2006 until November 2019 when she announced she would be stepping down.

Born and raised in Toronto, Paul graduated from the University of Ottawa with a Bachelor of Laws. She went on to pursue a Masters of Public Affairs from Princeton University before being called to the bar in Ontario in 1998.

Paul began her career in federal politics during the 2019 federal election as the GPC candidate in Toronto Centre which she lost to former Finance Minister, Bill Morneau. Later, Paul was appointed as the International Affairs Critic by May. She stepped down in February 2020 to enter the leadership race.

Officials for the GPC say nearly 69 per cent of Green members voted during the 2020 leadership contest.
