Two men seriously hurt in separate ATV crashes

A pair of ATV collisions in Elgin County sent two men to hospital with serious injuries on Sunday.

The first incident happened on a trail near Calton in Malahide Township around 11:15 a.m. when a 51-year-old man drove his ATV to set up a tree stand for the hunting season. The man drove the machine into a washout and was thrown into a ravine, Elgin OPP said.

When the man hadn't returned home by 6 p.m., his family called police, who found the man roughly 40 minutes later.

Emergency crews conducted a high angle rescue to get the man out of the ravine. He was taken to hospital with serious, non-life-threatening injuries.

The second collision happened around 7 p.m. in the area of Black's Road and McMillan Line west of Rodney. Two men were riding ATVs when one hit a pothole, causing the machine to roll.

According to police, the machine was being operated at a high rate of speed at the time of the crash.

The driver was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
