Routine traffic stop leads to $802K cannabis seizure

Provincial police found roughly $802,000 worth of pot after stopping a driver for allegedly using a cellphone while behind the wheel on Highway 401 east of London.

Middlesex OPP pulled the vehicle over at Dorchester Road in Thames Centre around 2:33 p.m. last Friday. During the routine stop, officers found a large amount of dried, packaged cannabis and $103,000 in cash inside the vehicle.

Two people were arrested at the scene.

A 42-year-old from Toronto and a 35-year-old from Beeton are charged with possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime over $5,000 and possession of cannabis for the purpose of distributing.

The 42-year-old is also facing an additional charge of driving while using a hand-held communication device.

Both individuals are scheduled to appear in court to answer to the charges on November 27.

"This investigation is another example of the dedicated work by all of our members to help remove the sale of illicit drugs from our streets," OPP said in a statement.
