Pair of new COVID-19 cases in London, eight in Elgin-Oxford

While the number of new COVID-19 cases in London and Middlesex County remains relatively low, Elgin and Oxford counties are dealing with a sudden spike.

The Middlesex London Health Unit reported two new cases of the virus on Wednesday. The new cases come one day after no one in the region tested positive over a 24 hour period.

The total number of cases since the start of the pandemic now stands at 669.

No additional recoveries were reported in the area since Tuesday, leaving the number of resolved cases at 585.

London-Middlesex has not seen any additional COVID-19 related deaths since June 12. The death toll remains unchanged at 57.

In Elgin and Oxford counties, the total number of cases shot up to 122, with eight more people infected with the virus. Southwestern Public Health, the health unit which oversees the two counties, has yet to make face coverings mandatory, but is said to be working on a plan to do so in the near future.

Two people previously diagnosed with the virus in the region have since recovered. The area's number of resolved cases now sits at 84. Five people in the two counties have died from COVID-19 since the start of the outbreak, with no additional deaths reported since July 3.

Ontario is marking its lowest single-day increase of new COVID-19 cases in four months.

Public health officials said on Wednesday there were only 76 new infections across the province. It is the lowest day-over-day increase since March 22.

While this is a positive sign, Health Minister Christine Elliott stressed this is not the time to start relaxing public health measures aimed at stopping the spread of the virus.

"Ontario, we’re making tremendous progress, but it’s never been more important that each of us continue to practice physical distancing and wear a mask when doing so isn’t possible," Elliott tweeted.

Twenty-eight of Ontario's health units reported five or fewer new cases on Wednesday. The province's total case count is now 38,986.

There was one additional death reported, bringing the total deaths in Ontario related to COVID-19 to 2,769.

Recoveries are up by 174 to 34,741.

"Hospitalizations, ICU admissions and vented patients have all declined," Elliott added.

The province announced on Wednesday it would allow Toronto and Peel Region to enter Stage 3 of reopening at 12:01 a.m. on Friday. That leaves Windsor-Essex as the lone region of Ontario to be held back in Stage 2.
