Inter-city transit service ready to launch

After being postponed in the opening weeks of the COVID-19 pandemic, the transit service that will link London, Strathroy, and Sarnia is ready to roll.

A news release issued Thursday says the service will begin on August 4. According to the release, the transit service will begin with three round trips each weekday and two round trips on Saturday and Sunday. The buses will have an approximate seating capacity of 10-12 passengers.

“A critical piece of our economic recovery depends on our ability to get people to and from work in a convenient and affordable manner," said London Mayor Ed Holder. "This need is not only local, it is also regional. The inter-community transit service will further connect our communities, while opening new employment opportunities, supporting local tourism, and strengthening the region as a whole.”

The fare price will be between $5 and $20, depending on how far a passenger travels. Children under the age of 5 will be able to ride for free. Passengers will have to reserve seats by calling 519-787-1055.

The service was initially set to begin in the spring of 2020, but officials announced on March 25 that it was being postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Officials now believe it is safe for the service to begin within the guidelines set down by health authories. Riders will have to wear masks, provide exact cash fare pay, and respect physical distancing guidelines. There will be barriers between drivers and passengers and reduced passenger capacity.

“We’re excited to announce the start of this service, knowing it will provide a much needed transportation alternative for those in the region, said Strathroy Mayor Joanne Vanderheyden. "Many residents, students and employers have been eagerly awaiting this service, and we’re happy to be able to tell them that it will be up and running come August 4th.”

The contract for the bus service was given to Voyago in December of 2019.
