Man assaulted with stick, cops spit on in Victoria Park

Charges have been laid against a 35-year-old London man after a person was attacked with a stick and three police officers were assaulted in a downtown park over the weekend.

A man was sitting in Victoria Park when another man hit him with a stick multiple times around 8:30 p.m. on Sunday. The attack, which was witnessed by several people, was unprovoked, London police said.

The victim suffered minor injuries but was able to get away and call for help.

Police arrived in the park and were able to use witness photos of the assault to identify a suspect. The man was soon found in the area of Richmond and Pall Mall streets.

As officers tried to arrest the man, he began throwing pylons and running through traffic on Richmond Street, in an effort to get away from police. Roughly 45 minutes after the initial assault, officers were able to physically get a hold of the man, who then began spitting and biting them and refused to walk to the police cruiser.

Two officers suffered minor injuries during the arrest.

A 35-year-old London man is charged with causing a disturbance, mischief under $5,000, resisting arrest, and three counts of assaulting a peace officer.

The accused is scheduled to appear in court in relation to the charges on Monday.

The victim of the assault declined to proceed with charges.
