UPDATE: 8-year-old dies in Adelaide Metcalfe collision

Provincial Police in Middlesex County have confirmed that an 8-year-old has died following a collision that involved an allegedly impaired driver.

OPP responded to a serious two-vehicle crash on Egremont Drive at Hickory Drive, around 10 p.m. on Friday.

Following the collision, police reported that three people had been sent to the hospital with minor injuries while an 8-year-old girl suffered life-threatening injuries.

The girl has since passed away from her injuries.

According to police, during the investigation officers learned that one of the driver's ability to operate a vehicle had allegedly been impaired and she was placed under arrested at the scene and then transported to Strathroy OPP detachment for further testing.

As a result, Alicia Van Bree, a 33-year-old from Strathroy, has been charged with operation while impaired and operation causing death.

The accused has been released from police custody and is set to appear in a London courtroom in September.

"The OPP wants to remind the public that crashes involving alcohol and/or drugs are a leading criminal cause of death in Canada," Constable Kevin Howe said in a release. "Every day on average of up to four Canadians are killed and many more are seriously injured in alcohol and/or drug-related motor vehicle collisions on public roads."

Anyone with information regarding the collision is encouraged to contact police or Crime Stoppers anonymously.
