UPDATE: Severe thunderstorms possible Friday

A week of extreme heat and humidity is coming to an end with the threat of severe thunderstorms, strong winds, and heavy rain.

Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning for Chatham-Kent and Windsor-Essex as of 10:40 p.m. on Friday.

The warning follows a number of severe thunderstorm watches and warnings throughout the day for Chatham-Kent, London-Middlesex, Windsor-Essex, and Sarnia Lambton. However,  all severe thunderstorm alerts were called off shortly after 10 p.m.

This was the third day in a row parts of southwestern Ontario have been under a severe thunderstorm watch.

The national weather agency said the conditions are favourable for the development of severe storms Friday afternoon into the evening.

The storms are capable of producing thunder, lightning, heavy rain, and strong wind gusts. Environment Canada has said between 15 to 25mm of rain could fall overnight.

Soaring temperatures combined with high humidity increase the risk of severe storms. Temperatures in southwestern Ontario have been in the low-to-mid 30s all week, with humidity that has made it feel more like the low-to-mid 40s.

By Saturday, temperatures across the region will be noticeably cooler with daytime highs nearly 10 degrees lower than what has been recorded all week. Temperatures for Saturday and Sunday are expected to be in the mid-20s.
