Man charged after hatchet attack

A man is facing charges after allegedly attacking another man with a hatchet in St. Thomas.

St. Thomas police were called Saturday afternoon to a grassy area by the creek at the west end of Barwick Street. According to police, some men were fishing when they were approached by another man and told to leave the area.

"An argument ensued and escalated when the suspect pulled a hatched striking the victim several times," police said in a news release issued Monday. "Police located the suspect near the scene and took him into custody without incident."

The victim suffered injuries to his hands and neck, according to police.

A 44-year-old man is charged with assault with a weapon and possession of a dangerous weapon. He was released from custody with a future court date.
