Downtown intersection to close for the summer

Officials at City Hall are hoping that Londoners will continue to support businesses around a downtown intersection that will be closed until September.

The City of London announced Friday that the intersection of Richmond Street and King Street will be closed on Monday, July 6 and remain closed until early September. The closure will allow crews to replace a section of sewer on King Street that is over 100 years old.

“This work is part of London’s commitment to creating a city and downtown core that is safe, efficient and ready for the future,” said Jim Yanchula, manager of Downtown Projects and Business Relations in a statement released by the City. “It will have a lasting impact on the environment by reducing the amount of untreated wastewater that flows into the Thames River, and help us support continued progress and development in our core.”

The project will also include street and sidewalk improvements in the immediate area. According to the city, efforts will be made to make sure people can still access businesses in the area, whether they travel by vehicle, bicycle, or on foot.

“While the intersection will be temporarily closed, nearby businesses on King and Richmond Streets will be open,” said Yanchula. “We encourage Londoners to continue to support their favourite downtown businesses, shops and restaurants through this temporary closure by coming to the core.”

While the work is ongoing, two blocks of King Street between Talbot Street and Clarence Street will be converted to two way traffic. There will also be detours for LTC buses. The details of the detours can be found here.
