One COVID-19 case reported, three LTC home outbreaks declared over

Outbreaks of COVID-19 at three London long-term care homes have been declared over as health officials report only a single new case of the virus across the region.

The Middlesex London Health Unit said Friday's lone newly confirmed case brings the total number since the pandemic began to 549. There were no additional deaths reported in the past 24 hours, only the second day this week in which the virus didn't claim a life in London or Middlesex County. The area's death toll remains at 56.

There was positive news for those in local long-term care, as the number of outbreaks in those facilities was cut in half. Outbreaks at Chelsey Park, Country Terrace, and Waverley Mansion were declared over, while the virus remains present at Chelsey Park Retirement Community, Kensington Village, and Sisters of St. Joseph.

The number of people diagnosed with COVID-19 in the care of the London Health Sciences Centre is down to eight.

Six more people infected with the virus have since recovered, increasing London's number of resolved cases to 403.

Southwestern Public Health, the health unit for Elgin and Oxford counties, reported no new cases or deaths on Friday. The region's total number of confirmed cases stands at 75, with 66 resolved. There has been a total of four COVID-19 related deaths in the two counties, with no new deaths reported since April 22.

Provincially, there were another 344 newly confirmed cases over the past 24 hours. There have now been 29,747 people who have tested positive for COVID-19 in the province since the start of the outbreak.

Fifteen additional deaths were confirmed by provincial health officials on Friday, bringing the death toll to 2,372.

The number of people in hospital with the virus is currently 749. Of those, 118 COVID-19 infected patients are listed in the intensive care unit, 94 of whom are hooked up to ventilators to help them breathe.

There were two additional outbreaks of the virus reported in Ontario long-term care homes since Thursday, bringing the total number of outbreaks within the facilities to 310.

The number of recoveries across the province has risen to 23,583.

For the second day in a row, a record number of COVID-19 tests were completed. A total of 22,730 people were tested over a 24-hour period.
