Retirement home resident latest COVID-19 death in London

There was another COVID-19 related death and two new cases of the virus reported in London and Middlesex County on Tuesday.

The Middlesex London Health Unit said the latest person to succumb to the coronavirus was a woman in her 80s, living in a retirement home. Her death brings the region's death toll up to 54. Thirty-four of those deaths have been associated with area long-term care homes or retirement facilities.

Since the outbreak began there have been 541 cases confirmed in the London-area. The London Health Sciences Centre currently has 11 infected patients in its care.

According to public health officials, 391 of those previously diagnosed with COVID-19 have since recovered.

There was one new case and no additional deaths reported in Oxford and Elgin counties over the past 24 hours. Southwestern Public Health, the health unit that oversees the two counties, reported its total number of confirmed cases sits at 75, with four deaths. One additional person has recovered from the virus, bringing the area's resolved case total to 61.

Province-wide, the number of newly confirmed cases was back over the 400 mark for the second day in a row. There were 446 cases reported by Ontario health officials on Tuesday. This is a slight increase over the 404 new cases recorded on Monday.

The total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the province is currently 28,709.

There were 17 additional deaths reported over the past 24 hours, bringing the death toll across the province to 2,293.

There is some good news though as the number of people to recover from the virus has increased. Public health officials said 22,484 of the confirmed cases have been resolved, which accounts for 78.3 per cent of all cases.

A total of 801 people with the virus are being cared for in Ontario hospitals, 125 of whom are in the intensive care unit.

There have been 309 outbreaks reported in long-term care homes, which is an increase of three from Monday. A total of 1,652 residents and seven staff of the homes have died.

More than half (66.2 per cent) of the confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the province has been in the Greater Toronto Area.
