UTRCA opens conservation areas for day use, boating

Outdoor enthusiasts can once again take in the beauty of nature at the conservation areas of the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority (UTRCA).

As of Monday, day use, boat launches and reservoirs will be reopened to the public at Fanshawe Conservation Area in London, Pittock Conservation Area in Woodstock, and Wildwood Conservation Area in St. Marys.

"We are excited to begin offering boating this week and seasonal camping in the near future," said Jennifer Howley, UTRCA conservation areas manager. "We also continue to welcome people to our conservation areas for hiking, biking, walking, and enjoying nature."

Those visiting the three conservation areas for the day are reminded that public washrooms are not yet open, so they should plan ahead and keep visits short. Physical distancing requirements and group size maximums of five also remain in place.

Conservation authority officials ask that anyone bringing a dog to the area keep it leashed at all times as free-running pets can pose a danger to other visitors and wildlife.

While overnight or short-term camping is still not permitted, seasonal camping will open at Fanshawe and Pittock on June 8 and at Wildwood on June 15. Seasonal campers reserve one campsite for the entire June to October camping season.

The provincial government announced the gradual reopening of back-country camping in Ontario parks and on Crown land over the weekend. It stressed that no more than five people will be allowed to occupy a backcountry campsite during their stay unless they live in the same household.

The closure of overnight camping and some day-use activities at provincial parks and conservation areas has been extended until June 14. The government will reassess the closure at that time.
