Diocese extends church closures through June

Roman Catholic churches across southwestern Ontario will remain closed a little longer.

Bishop Ronald Fabbro of the Diocese of London announced that churches will stay closed through the end of June, pending guidance from provincial and local health officials.

Churches had been closed for services and sacraments since mid-March, days after the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a global pandemic.

In a statement posted on the diocese's official website, Fabbro did indicate that the plan was subject to change.

"Our churches will remain closed at least until the end of June. If the government’s emergency orders are lifted sooner, we will adjust accordingly," said Fabbro. "We are mindful that preparations for the return to celebrations of the Mass and sacraments will take a great deal of organization and work, in order to maintain a healthy environment to prevent further spread of the coronavirus."

Fabbro has also recommended that all summer events in the diocese such as bazaars, parish picnics, dinners, movie nights, and pilgrimages be put on hold until at least Labour Day.

Funeral masses and luncheons have not been permitted during the pandemic, though rites of committal have still been held at cemeteries with only immediate family members present.  Baptisms, first communions, and confirmations have also been put on hold. Confessions are only being heard in the event of impending danger or death.

Complete information on how the Diocese of London is handling the pandemic can be found on its website.
