Landfill, special waste depot reopen

Londoners who have been holding on to things like old mattresses and paint cans can now dispose of them.

The City of London announced Tuesday morning that the landfill on Manning Drive and the on-site Household Special Waste Depot are reopening to the public. The depot had been closed since March due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Residents will now be able once again to drop off items like paint, batteries, fluorescent lights, and electronics. Blue box recyclables, old tires, scrap metal, as well as leaves and brush can also now be dropped off at the landfill site. Fees for some items apply.

“Our waste and recycling teams are working tirelessly to make sure London stays clean and our facilities can continue to operate safely,” Jay Stanford, Director of Environment, Fleet and Solid Waste, said in a news release issued Tuesday. “We appreciate the patience of Londoners as we adapt to the impacts of COVID-19, and can now reopen these facilities for the public to use.”

While the site on Manning Drive is reopening, it won't be business as usual. The city says there have been changes made in order to reduce the possible spread of COVID-19. Cash won't be accepted until further notice. Instead, residents will have to use debit or credit. People will also have to make sure they maintain a physical distance of at least two metres. They are also asked to complete their drop-off quickly and then leave the site, and not mingle or socialize.

The W12A site will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. It is closed on Sundays and statutory holidays.
