Four new COVID-19 cases, one death in London-area

For the second time this week, there has been a COVID-19 related death at a local retirement home.

The Middlesex London Health Unit said on Tuesday a woman in her 70s succumbed to the virus, raising the area's death toll to 51. There have been a total of 31 deaths at long-term care facilities and retirement homes in London and Middlesex County.

Outbreaks remain at eight institutions in the city - Chelsey Park, Country Terrace, Henley Place Long-Term Care Residence, Kensington Village, Meadow Park Care Centre, Mount Hope Centre for Long-Term Care, Sisters of St. Joseph, and Waverley Mansion.

The number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the region rose to 505 with four more cases reported over the past 24 hours.

The London Health Sciences Centre has 16 patients diagnosed with the virus in its care.

Public health officials report the number of people in the area to recover from the virus has increased to 367.

Southwestern Public Health, the health unit for Elgin and Oxford counties, reported one new case and no additional deaths Tuesday. The two counties have not seen any COVID-19 related deaths since April 22. Their total number of confirmed cases is 73, with four deaths. Fifty-eight of the cases have been resolved.

After five days of recording more than 400 COVID-19 cases daily, the province reported its smallest increase in daily new cases since the end of March.

Ontario health officials said there were 287 newly confirmed cases of the virus over the last 24 hours. The daily case number has not been that low since March 31, when 260 cases were confirmed in a single day.

Since the outbreak began, there have been a total of 26,191 cases across the province. There were 21 additional deaths reported on Tuesday, bringing the death toll to 2,123.

The number of people in hospital with the virus sits at 848, with 143 of the infected in the intensive care unit.

According to the epidemiologic summary, there are 297 outbreaks at the province's long-term care homes and 123 within retirement homes.

More than 4,400 health-are workers in Ontario have tested positive for COVID-19.

The number of recoveries has risen to 19,958.
