SIU probing St. Thomas arrest

Ontario's police oversight agency is investigating after a man was injured while being arrested in St. Thomas.

The St. Thomas Police Service said the man was arrested Sunday morning after allegedly threatening another man with a hatchet. It happened in the area of Hincks Street and Centre Street around 10 a.m. Police say officers tracked the man to a gully and, while he was being arrested, the man became combative.

"Once in custody, the man was found to have sustained an injury and was transported to hospital where he was treated and released. No other injuries were reported during the incident," police said Monday. Police did not say what kind of injury the man suffered.

The Special Investigations Unit, which probes reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault, has been called in to investigate the incident.

The 57-year-old man is charged with assault with a weapon, resisting arrest, and possession of stolen property.
