Seven more COVID-19 cases, no new deaths in London-Middlesex

No new COVID-19 related deaths, but seven additional cases were confirmed in London and Middlesex County on Monday.

The Middlesex London Health Unit said the newly confirmed cases bring the total number in the area since the outbreak began to 423. Eighty-five of those cases were in long-term care homes and forty-six were in retirement facilities.

The London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) has 25 people diagnosed with the virus in its care, eight of whom are listed in intensive care. To date, 39 LHSC employees have tested positive for COVID-19. However, not all of those cases can be linked back to the hospital. A single outbreak of the virus remains at Victoria Hospital in the geriatric behavioural unit.

There have been 40 COVID-19 related deaths in the London-area.

A total of 264 people have recovered from the virus.

Southwestern Public Health, the health unit for Elgin and Oxford counties, reported only one new case on Monday. That brings its total number of confirmed cases to 60. There have been four deaths with no new COVID-19 fatalities since April 21. According to local public health officials, 37 of the cases have been resolved.

Provincially, the total number of people to die from COVID-19 has reached 1,300, with 84 new deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

The number of confirmed cases went up by 370 to 17,923. The daily epidemiologic summary states that the number of people hospitalized with the virus sits at 984. Of those, 225 are in the intensive care unit, 175 with ventilators to help them breathe.

A total of 2,761 health-care workers in Ontario have been infected.

Public health officials note 12,505 of the people who contracted the virus have since recovered.

Long-term care homes continue to be the hardest hit in the province by COVID-19 with 626 deaths reported at those facilities. There have been 212 outbreaks reported in long-term care homes. Five outbreaks remain at care homes in London - Earls Court Village, Elmwood Place, Henley Place, Kensington Village, and Meadow Park.
