Essential construction to commence May 4

Several construction projects are set to begin within the Forest City on Monday.

The city announced three separate infrastructure renewal projects following the province's designation of essential construction. The projects will cause some road closures that will affect residents commuting in the areas.

Dundas St. between English St. and Rectory St. will have restrictions while workers make sewer, watermain, and streetscape improvements. Drivers and cyclists will only be able to head east on Dundas off of Rectory, while the intersection of English and Dundas will be completely closed to traffic.

Drivers heading east will be able to detour on to King St. while westbound drivers detour on to Queens Ave.

The downtown core will also see more construction this year. Richmond St. between King St. and York St. will be closed for sewer upgrades.

A detour route will be in place on Wellington St. for northbound traffic and Clarence St. for traffic heading south.

Heading further east, Hamilton Rd. at Trafalgar St. and Egerton St. will be closed for renewal work.

A detour will be in place on Hamilton to divert eastbound traffic onto Trafalgar. Those heading west from Highbury Ave. should consider using Trafalgar as well.

Access to businesses will remain open while crews work on the projects. Pedestrians will be able to navigate the areas by following posted signage relating to physical distancing requirements. Cyclists are reminded to dismount their bikes before they pass through a construction zone.

The city said their teams will follow strict health and safety protocols to ensure the safety of workers and the community during the COVID-19 pandemic.

More information including bus detours can be found on the city's website.
