Province to allow some business to re-open next week

Several types of businesses, including garden centres, will be allowed to re-open on Monday as long as they adhere to strict public health measures.

Premier Doug Ford made the announcement on Friday.

"We are allowing certain businesses to reopen under strict guidelines because we are confident they can operate safely and adapt to the current environment," said Premier Ford. "While further reductions in the spread are needed before we can begin reopening the province, we have the right framework and the right workplace guidelines in place to do so gradually and safely."

Among the businesses that will be allowed to re-open Monday are garden centres (curbside pickup and delivery only), landscape and lawn care companies, automatic and self-serve car washes, and auto dealerships (by appointment only). The premier also said municipal projects can go ahead, as can essential construction projects including those related to colleges and universities, schools, child care centres, and any other project that supports the improved delivery of goods and services.

Golf courses will be allowed to prepare courses for the season, but are not yet permitted to open. Marinas will be allowed to service boats and other watercraft and place them in the water, but the marinas will not be open to the public.

"Although certain businesses are being permitted to reopen, it is critical that people continue to stay home, practise physical distancing and only go out for essential reasons, to pick up groceries, prescriptions or to keep a medical appointment," a statement from the government said. "It is through these simple actions that Ontario is making progress to stop the spread of COVID-19."
