Guns, grenades seized near Strathroy

A man is facing several charges after a high-risk traffic stop near Strathroy led to the seizure of two hand grenades.

Strathroy-Caradoc police say they were called around 3:30 p.m. Thursday about a suspicious man in Mount Brydges, who appeared to be intoxicated. Officers found the man in the area of Adelaide Road and Railway Avenue. He then left in a taxi. Shortly after, police found two loaded flare guns that had been converted to fire shotgun ammunition.

"A short time later The Strathroy-Caradoc Police with the assistance of the OPP conducted a high-risk vehicle stop on Adelaide Road north of Walker's Drive," police said in a statement. "Upon arrest of the male, police located a bag containing what appeared to be two hand grenades."

Adelaide Road was closed to traffic for several hours, as the OPP explosive disposal unit was called in to safely remove the grenades.

A 37-year-old man is now facing 14 firearms and explosive related charges.

"There was no risk to public safety at the time of the incident. All residents in the area were advised to stay inside until the explosives were disposed of safely. There were no other suspects involved," police said.
