Ten new cases of COVID-19 in London-area

There were no new COVID-19 related deaths in London-Middlesex Friday, but 10 additional cases of the virus have been confirmed.

The latest figures released by the Middlesex London Health Unit show four of the new cases are among the elderly - one in long-term care, three others in retirement facilities. The newly confirmed cases bring the total number of people to be infected with the virus in the London-area since the outbreak began to 357. There have been a total of 26 COVID-19 related deaths in the region, including 11 in long-term care homes and one in a retirement home.

The London Health Sciences Centre has 33 patients diagnosed with COVID-19 in its care. Eleven of those patients are listed in the intensive care unit. There are two outbreaks of the virus reported within Victoria Hospital - one on the oncology unit and the other on the geriatric behavioural unit. The affected units are closed to new patient admissions and are undergoing enhanced cleaning measures.

According to local public health officials, 173 people have recovered from the virus.

Southwestern Public Health, the health unit covering Elgin and Oxford counties, there was one new case confirmed within the last 24 hours, to bring that area's total to 54. There were no new deaths reported. Between the two counties, there have been two institutional outbreaks of the virus.

In Ontario, 640 additional cases of COVID-19 were reported on Friday, another record for the highest number of cases confirmed in a single day. Province-wide there has been a total of 13,519 cases.

Another 50 deaths related to the virus have been reported. This brings the province's death toll to 763.

A total of 910 Ontarians infected with the virus are in hospital, 193 are in intensive care on ventilators to help them breathe.

There have been 143 outbreaks in long-term care homes across the province. Those facilities have been the hardest hit by the pandemic, with 463 deaths reported among residents. That is an increase of 105 deaths since the previous epidemiologic summary was released by health officials on Thursday.

More than half of the people confirmed to have COVID-19 have since recovered, with the province reporting 7,087 resolved cases.
