No plans for Canada to retaliate against U.S. for 3M restrictions

Justin Trudeau is promising that Canada will soon receive millions of medical masks.

In his daily address on Saturday morning, the prime minister said that the federal government is working around the clock to get Canada the necessary resources needed during the COVID-19 pandemic.

"In the next 48 hours, we will be receiving a shipment of millions of masks by a chartered cargo flight," he said.

He added that Canada has also leased a warehouse in China to help collect and distribute the emergency items.

"Going forward, the flights we're chartering to get the materials here include Canadian companies Cargojet and Air Canada," he explained.

Trudeau's announcement comes just one day after The White House ordered 3M to stop exporting medical equipment to Canada and Latin markets.

When questioned about these actions, Trudeau was adamant that government officials on both sides of the border remain in constant contact, adding that Canada has no plans for retaliatory measures at the point.

"We recognize that our countries are deeply interlinked in sometimes very complex ways," Trudeau said. "The necessary goods and services that flow back and forth between our border keep us both safe and help us on both sides of the border. We are continuing to engage in constructive discussions with different levels within the administration to highlight that the U.S. will be hurting itself as much as Canada will be hurting."

Trudeau said he plans to speak to President Donald Trump in the next few days, adding that the two have already been in contact numerous times since the COVID-19 pandemic started.

"We know that it is in both of our interests to continue to work collaboratively and corporately to keep our citizens safe," he said. "That's very much the tenure of our conversations and I'm confident that we're going to get there."
