Charges laid in fatal 401 crash

A 59-year-old Brampton man has now been charged in a multi-vehicle crash on Highway 401 west of London that claimed the life of an Ohio man last fall.

Benjamin Dionisio, 34, of Toledo was killed when his vehicle, two tractor trailers, a five-tonne commercial truck, and a second passenger vehicle collided in the eastbound lanes of the highway between Iona Road and Union Road in Southwold Township around 11 a.m. on October 18 of last year.

The vehicles were trying to merge into one lane due to construction when the crash occurred, Elgin OPP said.

Dionisio was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other people were rushed to hospital with serious injuries.

A section of the highway was closed for several hours to allow for clean up and the police investigation into the cause of the crash.

On Friday, OPP announced a 59-year-old man was arrested and charged in relation to the crash.

Anjum Choudhry of Brampton is charged with criminal negligence causing death and criminal negligence causing bodily harm. He will appear in St. Thomas court on June 23.
