London-Middlesex confirms 13 new cases of COVID-19

The number of people hospitalized in the London-area due to COVID-19 has risen as local health officials report another 13 confirmed cases of the virus.

The Middlesex London Health Unit said on Thursday the additional cases bring the region's total number since the outbreak began to 79. No specifics, such as age, gender, or transmission source, have been released about the latest 13 people to be diagnosed with the virus.

A total of 18 people are currently in London hospital due to COVID-19, up from 11 on Wednesday. The London Health Sciences Centre said 10 of those patients are in intensive care – five at Victoria Hospital and five at University Hospital.

There have been three COVID-19-related deaths in London-Middlesex. Nine of the previously announced cases have been resolved.

Southwestern Public Health reported another three newly confirmed cases, bringing the total case number in Elgin and Oxford counties to 18. All three of the new cases are in Oxford and involve women - two in their 50s and one in her 30s.

Provincial health officials reported the total number of cases in Ontario shot up by another 401 on Thursday. There are now a total of 2,793 cases in the province since the outbreak began.

53 deaths have been linked to the virus and 831 cases have been resolved, according to the Ministry of Health.

There have been 26 COVID-19 outbreaks reported in long-term care homes across the province.
