St. Thomas airshow grounded due to COVID-19

The Great Lakes International Air Show and AirFest in St. Thomas has been cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The airshow had been set to lift off at the St. Thomas Municipal Airport on June 26, but in an effort to reduce the spread of the virus organizers made the decision to scrap this year's show.

"The cancellation comes at the guidance of federal, provincial and local health officials who are looking to mitigate health risks," organizers said in a statement. "As disappointing as this decision is to all of our team, our priority continues to be the health and safety of our community during this unprecedented time."

The airshow will return to St. Thomas next year, organizers said.

SR-71 'blackbird' jet pilot Captain Brian Shul, who was to speak at the show's Friday night gala, has confirmed he will be the keynote speaker at the 2021 airshow.

"As well we have commitments from most of our performers that they will also be with us next June," organizers added.

Tickets that were purchased for this year's air spectacle will be honoured at next year's airshow.
