Returning travellers reminded to self-isolate

Local public health officials are reminding those who travelled abroad for the March Break that they need to spend the next two weeks in self-isolation.

The Middlesex London Health Unit is urging all travellers returning to Canada to stay home for 14 days to limit the spread of COVID-19. That includes people who do not have any symptoms.

"Now more than ever, it is important for our community to rally together, maintaining a physical distance of at least six feet and being creative in finding opportunities to build social connection," Dr. Chris Mackie, medical officer of health and CEO of the Middlesex-London Health Unit, said in a statement. "Offering to pick up groceries for family or friends who are in self-isolation or dropping off activity books for neighbouring children can help us to feel that we are all in this together."

Symptoms of COVID-19 include fever, new or worsening cough, or difficulty breathing. Anyone who does develop symptoms while in self-isolation should use the Ministry of Health’s self-assessment tool or call Telehealth Ontario at 1-866-797-0000, prior to visiting a healthcare provider, the health unit said.

For anyone who does need to visit a doctor, the health unit recommends notifying the medical office of travel history and symptoms prior to arrival.

Over the weekend, the London-area recorded its 12th confirmed case of COVID-19. A man in his 50s, who had recently travelled to the UK, was diagnosed with the virus. He remains in self-isolation.
