A 34-year-old man has been charged with intentionally setting a fire that broke out in downtown Woodstock.

The Woodstock Police Service said Alexander Willet of Woodstock was arrested and is charged with one count of arson after a fire rapidly spread through the building at 488 Dundas St. on Wednesday evening.

Police said Willett, who is a resident of the building, was taken to hospital after he was injured while attempting to escape the burning building through a window.

An investigation into the fire is ongoing with the help of the Woodstock Fire Department and the Ontario Fire Marshall’s Office.

Anyone who may have a video recording of the fire is asked to contact Detective Constable Mike Haegens of the Woodstock Police Service at 519-537-2323.
