Wet and windy weather on the way

Residents of southwestern Ontario should prepare for a blustery and wet Thursday night.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement that covers London and Middlesex County, Elgin County, Oxford County, Chatham-Kent, Windsor and Essex County, Sarnia-Lambton, Huron County, and Perth County.

The weather agency said some parts of the region could see heavy rainfall on Thursday night.

"An approaching warm front will cause an area of showers and thunderstorms to move through the regions this evening," it said. "Some of [the] storms will contain heavy downpours with local rainfall amounts of 25 mm in an hour possible. A few showers or thunderstorms are also expected overnight in some areas. There is the risk that isolated thunderstorms overnight could contain wind gusts to 90 km/h."

Forecasters say the threat of strong wind gusts will last into Friday morning and into the early afternoon as a cold front approaches the region. That cold front is expected to be preceded by a band of scattered showers and thunderstorms. Environment Canada says power outages are a possibility.
