Dump truck takes out hydro pole in south London

A downed hydro pole snarled traffic along a main artery in south London Thursday morning.

A dump truck collided with a pole on Wellington Road near Bond Street shortly before 8 a.m. The force of the crash toppled the pole onto the cab of the truck and left live power lines dangling.

The truck driver, who was not hurt, was trapped inside the vehicle for roughly an hour and a half.

"Our crews arrived with police already on scene and determined that the safest course of action was to have the driver remain in the vehicle until London Hydro was able to confirm isolation of power from both directions," said Platoon Chief Gary Mosburger. "If the vehicle was energized by the power lines, the worst thing that you could do is leave the vehicle."

Mosburger commended the driver for remaining inside the cab and waiting for emergency crews to give him the all-clear to come out.

"They did exactly what they should have done which is to call 911 and have emergency crews arrive while they stayed in the vehicle," said Mosburger.

Hydro was knocked out for roughly 61 customers in the area, according to London Hydro. Crews spent several hours replacing the pole and restoring power.

Wellington Road between McClary Avenue and Bond Street was fully reopened to traffic shortly before 6 p.m.
