A London mother of six is clinging to life in a hospital in Jamaica after a head-on crash involving a tour bus that left four other people dead.
Anika Walters, 39, was heading to the Montego Bay Airport to catch a flight back to Canada last Sunday when the car she was in collided with the bus. Four men in the car were killed. Walters was rushed to hospital with severe injuries including a fractured skull, two broken legs, a broken arm, a broken jaw, and a concussion.
Her family is now trying to raise enough money through a GoFundMe page to have Walters airlifted to Toronto.
"Anika is a very loving and caring mother, she is always the life of the party, always going out of her way to help others," Kayla Dobney, Walters' sister, said in the online fundraiser. "We miss her dearly and want nothing more than to be by her side during her difficult time of need... We just want her back home safe and sound so that we can help speed up her recovery."
Walters' family has been told the cost to transport a person by air ambulance from Jamaica to Canada is approximately $70,000. As of Friday morning, nearly $800 had been donated through the online fundraiser.
The single mother and her children, aged four to 21, were in Jamaica to visit relatives over the holidays. While the kids flew back to Canada at the start of January, Walters opted to stay for a few extra weeks.
"This has been a blow to the heart for her children as she is the light in their life," Dobney added.
