Woodstock police warn of phoney cop requesting bitcoins

Woodstock police are sending out a warning about a scammer who has been posing as a local cop to get money from unsuspecting citizens.

The word of caution comes after police received reports of a man calling people claiming to be a Woodstock police officer. The phone number the man is calling from appears to be that of police headquarters, but is not.

The phoney cop tells his victims that their identity has been compromised and that if they don't comply with his requests they will be charged with obstruction.

"The scammer was able to provide the victim with confidential personal information including the victim’s Social Insurance Number to “verify” the “officer” was legitimate," said police.

The victim is then asked to withdraw a large sum of money and drive to the bitcoin machine in Burlington to transfer the funds.

Police are now reminding the public that officers will never request money or bitcoins in order to keep someone out of jail. They add that in these situations it is always best to contact local police directly to ensure you are not being scammed.
