Local water levels to remain high

After the heavy downpour between Friday and Sunday, water levels in local streams and rivers are expected to remain high.

The Upper Thames River Conservation Authority (UTRCA) is reminding watershed residents that water levels in streams and rivers will remain very high for the next few days.

According to the UTRCA, water levels in most streams and rivers in the Upper Thames River watershed peaked Sunday morning or early afternoon and will remain near peak levels.

"Streams and rivers across the watershed will remain high and then slowly lower throughout the next week," said the UTRCA in a media release.

Because many low-lying areas close to the river are underwater, caution is urged for people traveling on Sunday and to work and school on Monday.

Streambanks are extremely slippery. Residents are encouraged to stay away from any watercourses and to not enter any standing water.

The UTRCA’s flood-control reservoirs at Fanshawe, Wildwood and Pittock Conservation Areas are being used to minimize flood impacts.

The URTCA says that the southern portions of the watershed (including London and Woodstock) generally received approximately 65 mm of rain.
