Neil Peart, who is considered one of the best drummers in rock history, has died at the age of 67.
The Canadian drummer and lyricist for the band Rush died on Tuesday in Santa Monica, California from brain cancer. Peart had been battling the disease for over three years.
"It is with broken hearts and the deepest sadness that we must share the terrible news that on Tuesday our friend, soul brother and bandmate of over 45 years, Neil, has lost his incredibly brave three-and-a-half year battle with brain cancer," the band said in a Twitter post on Friday. "We ask that friends, fans, and media alike understandably respect the family's need for privacy and peace at this extremely painful and painful time. Those wishing to express their condolences can choose a cancer research group or charity of their choice and make a donation in Neil's name."
Peart, who was born in Hamilton, Ontario, helped to make Rush one of the most iconic bands in the era of classic-rock, after joining the group in 1974 with singer-bassist Geddy Lee and guitarist Alex Lifeson. Over his years with the band, he wrote seven non-fiction books that were focused on his travels and personal stories.
Peart leaves behind his wife, Carrie Nuttall, and daughter Olivia.
Rush completed their final tour in 2015.
