St. Thomas police are commending a quick-thinking local drug store clerk for saving a woman from being scammed out of $2,600.
The woman was trying to buy Google Play Cards from the unnamed pharmacy to send to someone she thought was her bank manager. The clerk questioned the woman about her purchase at the checkout and warned her it was likely a scam.
Police said the woman told them the individual posing as her bank manager claimed the cards were to be used as part of an internal bank investigation after the woman's accounts had allegedly been hacked.
"A huge thanks to the store clerk for doing the right thing," police said in a statement issued Tuesday.
Police are using the incident as a reminder to the public that legitimate financial institutions will not ask for gift cards as a form of currency.
