TVDSB to close high schools if teachers walk out

The Thames Valley District School Board says it will close high schools on Wednesday if members of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation stage a one-day strike.

The OSSTF announced Thursday that it plans a one-day walkout if it is unable to get a new contract by then. The teachers would return to work on Thursday.

"We are hopeful that an agreement will be reached, however, if there is a walkout on December 4, #TVDSB has no other option but to close all secondary schools to students as there would not be sufficient supervision to ensure student safety," the school board said in a tweet that was sent out Friday.

The board added that the one-day closure would also result in the cancellation of all field trips and sporting events on Wednesday. It said parents and guardians should make alternate arrangements for their children if necessary.

Elementary schools will be open.

"We appreciate your ongoing understanding, patience and support of our students. If an agreement is reached, secondary schools will remain open on Wednesday, December 4, 2019," the board tweeted.
