High school teachers to begin work-to-rule campaign Tuesday

The province's secondary school teachers are reassuring parents their work-to-rule campaign will have no effect on students in the classroom.

Members of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation (OSSTF) will begin their job action on Tuesday.

According to the union, information pickets will be set up before or after school, or during lunch periods. The goal is to educate the public about what the union calls the Ford government’s "destructive plans" for Ontario’s education system.

The union's 60,000 members will also withdraw some administrative services including EQAO preparation or testing, commenting on report cards, and participation in unpaid staff meetings.

“Doug Ford’s Minister of Education would have Ontarians believe that he’s eager to get to a deal,” OSSTF President Harvey Bischof said in a statement on Thursday. “But the bargaining process has been underway for months now, and through that entire time the government side of the table has willfully avoided any meaningful discussion of issues that are crucial to the quality of education in Ontario.

Bischof claimed the government has refused to acknowledge the "devastating effect" increased class sizes, mandatory e-learning, and the loss of thousands of teacher and support staff positions will have on the province’s students.

He added that the union is still hoping to reach a negotiated agreement.

A similar work-to-rule campaign by Ontario's public elementary school teachers is also scheduled to begin on Tuesday.
