Londoners will have to suffer through a few more days of chilly weather before more seasonal conditions return to the region.
Temperatures plummeted below the freezing mark earlier this week as a very cold arctic airmass moved across southwestern and southern Ontario. Seasonal daytime highs for the London area this time of year should be around 7 C or 8 C, but Tuesday's daytime high struggled to get to 5 C. The overnight temperature into Wednesday dropped to -10.6 C, roughly ten degrees colder than the -0.1 C average low for November 13.
"When we are getting overnight lows in the minus double-digits we are certainly well below where we should be, which is highly unusual compared to recent years," said Environment Canada severe weather meteorologist Brian Owsiak.
Daytime highs for Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday are forecast to be -3 C, 0 C, and 1 C. However it will feel much cooler each day because of the wind chill.
The good news though, there is an end in sight to the unseasonably cold weather.
"It does look like the weekend and into early next week we will warm up to more seasonal temperatures for the time of year," said Owsiak. "It won't be warm, but it will be closer to seasonal. For London that is highs around 7 C and lows around 0 C."
Lake effect cloud cover, acting as a bit of insulation, kept London from breaking a low-temperature record on Wednesday morning when 24 other records fell across the southern half of the province. Windsor, Sarnia, Delhi, Brantford, Hamilton, and Toronto were among the cities to set new record low temperatures on this date.
