Sportsnet fires Don Cherry

Don Cherry will no longer be appearing on television screens across Canada on Saturday nights.

Sportsnet announced on Monday afternoon that it is parting ways with the long-time host of Coach's Corner who has been under fire since his comments about immigrants not wearing poppies on Saturday night's broadcast.

“You people… that come here, whatever it is. You love our way of life, you love our milk and honey, at least you can pay a couple bucks for a poppy or something like that,” Cherry said during the Coach's Corner segment on Saturday night. “These guys paid for your way of life that you enjoy in Canada, these guys paid the biggest price.”

Criticism of the comments was swift and widespread. The criticism led to apologies from Coach's Corner co-host Ron MacLean and a statement from Sportsnet that called Cherry's remarks "offensive."

On Monday afternoon, the network released a statement saying Cherry would no longer be on Coach's Corner.

Cherry had been the host of Coach's Corner since 1981.
